About GeneaBlogs and Shared Ancestors
GeneaBlogs, in conjunction with its companion site, Shared Ancestors, offers the genealogist the total package. Either individually, or in combination, both of these sites gives you several genealogy options: a place to post and display your family research, the ability for you to interact with others that have the same passion and interest in genealogy; a blog for you to post your info, thoughts, ideas, tips and tricks, etc. and a vehicle to share your research experiences and knowledge with others. Or you can utilize both sites and have it all!
The first step is to decide what information you want to put online. Do you want to publish a linked family tree including everyone in your database? Or do you want to present a written family history, with pages of text, photos and source documents? How about both? Before you choose you need to think about the types of things you’d like to include:
Define Your Purpose – What do you hope to achieve? Is it to present data on a particular individual, an entire family, or a particular region? Do you want a vehicle for family members to participate – enabling them to contribute information and upload photos? Do you want to attract potential cousins searching for the same surnames in your database? Once you have defined exactly what you want to accomplish, explore the following options:
Publish a Pedigree
If all you want to do is create a searchable database, then consider submitting a GEDCOM file to Shared Ancestors. This allows your family tree to be found by people searching the Internet, yet requires very little work or technical knowledge. You don’t have to learn HTML – we do it for you! And you have the dedicated staff of Shared Ancestors to help you. Staff are always available to answer any questions you may have, assist you with any technicalities or issues, or just to give you encouragement and cheer you on when you need it!
Blog Your Family History
A second choice is a genealogy blog to document your family history search. A blog, short for “web log,” is basically an online journal, although a blog can be easily used to create a more robust genealogy site. Blogs provide room for text, photos, and other goodies, and you don’t need to know any HTML. Your stories and info can be made private, or available only to people that you designate, if you so desire. The blog is YOURS, to create and share as you wish. You can sign up for an account through our Shared Ancestors companion site, GeneaBlogs! GeneaBlogs allows you to have your own personal blog but without the hassle of the technical issues when trying to run a standalone blog. The GeneaBlogs staff is always here to guide you, providing blog help, support and assist whenever you need it.
The Total Package
Family history is about so much more than family tree charts and GEDCOM files. Using both Shared Ancestors and GeneaBlogs lets you create a profile to tell others about your research interests, to receive and respond to emails from other users without publishing your email address, to create online family trees and personal research pages, and to collaborate with other users.
